Chairmen of Taiwan Stock Exchange and Korea Stock Exchange Meet Up to Discuss ESG and Startup Ecosystems

Mr. Sherman H.M. Lin, Chairman & CEO of the Taiwan Stock Exchange (the “TWSE”),visited to the Korea Exchange  to exchange business views and ideas.

Chairman Lin and Mr. Byungdoo Sohn, CEO & Chairman of the Korea Exchange ("KRX"), held a meeting at the Seoul office of the Korea Exchange on November 9. This meeting marked Chairman Lin's first ever in-person visit to the Korea Exchange. The two chairmen shared their views regarding current global economic changes and geopolitical impacts, and discussed strategies to address them. This trip is the third time Chairman Lin has crossed paths with Chairman Sohn, following close behind an online CEO meeting on August 22, and the bilateral meeting at the 61st Annual Meeting of the World Federation of Exchanges in Malta on September 28, clear signs of the close, positive relationship between the Taiwan and Korea Exchanges.

During the TWSE-KRX chairmen meeting held in Seoul, attendees focused on the ESG development in both markets, as well as the vision and experience of fostering new and innovative enterprises. A consensus was also reached to further expand cooperation and experience sharing in ESG and innovation sectors in the future. The leaders expressed support and confidence in the Taiwan-Korea cooperation, opining that, through strengthening the ties between the two exchanges, the value of these markets can be further promoted.

Since taking office this July, Chairman Lin has been actively building an integrated information platform and ESG evaluation to develop the ESG ecosystem, as well as vigorously promoting the development of the Taiwan Innovation Board (“TIB”). In addition to launching a number of incentives and promotional activities, requirements for financial statements of qualified investors and the market value criteria for listing on TIB have also been relaxed. Therefore, in addition to the chairmen's meeting, the TWSE delegation visited the KRX headquarters in Busan on November 8 to communicate with the ESG-related commodity market team, and visited KRX’s Seoul office as well, to learn from the experience of the KONEX market team. Thorough practical discussions were had in both meetings, facilitating mutual understanding at the business level.

Taiwan has long-term cooperation with major global markets and regional exchange partners in the areas of products, systems, and talent cultivation. In recent years, such cooperative fellowship has been extended to areas such as sustainable finance and innovative industries. In order to meet the competition and challenges brought by the global political and economic situation, TWSE will continue to foster mutually beneficial international connectivity and build a brighter future for Taiwan's capital market.

For almost three years, business travel has been nearly shut down entirely due to the raging COVID-19 pandemic. This made the Korea visit of the TWSE all the more special. In the future, the TWSE will continue to fortify and expand global connections as always, bringing the Taiwan capital market into the international stage.
