The TWSE’s greenhouse gas inventory workshop aiming to help enterprises achieve net zero transformation has successfully concluded

To comply with the Financial Supervisory Commission’s promotion of the “Sustainable Development Action Plans for TWSE- and TPEx-Listed Companies” and the “Roadmap for Taiwan listed companies to align with IFRS Sustainability Disclosure Standards,” recently the Taiwan Stock Exchange (TWSE), the Taipei Exchange, the Taiwan Futures Exchange, and the Taiwan Depository & Clearing Corporation jointly held five sessions of the “Greenhouse Gas Inventory Practical Workshop” in Taipei, Hsinchu, Taichung and Kaohsiung. The workshop attracted representatives from over 300 TWSE- and TPEx-listed companies and received wide acclaim

As the global climate change situation is becoming increasingly severe, the responsibility of enterprises to reduce carbon emissions is becoming more and more important. The Sustainability Disclosure Standards issued by the International Financial Reporting Standards Foundation (IFRS Foundation) also explicitly require enterprises to disclose carbon emission information for Scope 3 greenhouse gases, demonstrating the importance and urgency of Scope 3 inventory work. However, the emissions in Scope 3 involve the carbon footprint of the entire supply chain of an enterprise, including product manufacturing, transportation, sales and use, as well as activities such as employee commuting and business travel, giving many challenges to enterprises in data collection and analysis.

In response to these challenges, this workshop arranged a special practical session for greenhouse gas Scope 3. The course was guided by a team of professional lecturers and covered the development trends of greenhouse gas management, inventory standards, as well as the “Reference Guide and Frequently Asked Questions for Scope 3 Greenhouse Gas Inventory Operations” which will be released soon. Through practical exercises, participants learned the specific methods of Scope 3 data collection, calculation, coefficient data sources and management, thereby enhancing their inventory abilities.

The TWSE stated that in the five sessions of the Greenhouse Gas Inventory Workshop successively launched in late August, the participants generally felt the courses highly practical, especially the practical cases which helped them understand the problems that they may encounter during the inventory process. The teaching format of the workshop also promoted communication, mutual learning, and experience sharing between the lecturers and business representatives, and jointly enhanced their practical abilities for Scope 3.

To increase the influence of this Greenhouse Gas Inventory Workshop, the workshop content will be made into audio-visual course materials and placed on websites such as the ESG InfoHub and the Special Zone for Compliance with IFRS Sustainability Disclosure Standards, in order to provide reference for all TWSE- and TPEx-listed companies and assist more enterprises in mastering Scope 3 inventory skills. In the future, the TWSE will continuously promote the greenhouse gas inventory of listed companies and the development of the ESG ecosystem, in order to assist enterprises in addressing sustainability challenges, and work together to achieve the goal of net zero emission.
